Canada in the Spotlight: Olympics and Baby Seals

Millions of eyes are on Canada, watching the Olympics. Downhill skiing, luge, and my all-time favorite - figure skating. Animal lovers and welfare activists also want to use this time to shed light on Canada's seal hunt - one of the most hideous acts against animals imaginable.

A couple of the national animal welfare organizations spearheading efforts to put a stop to this, include International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

May this travesty one day end.

Win Money for Your Favorite Charity

It's a tough time for charities and nonprofits. Money is tight. A couple of animal rescue operators I spoke with said that 2009 was the toughest economic time they have faced in years.

That is why the Show Us Your Goodness campaign, sponsored by riceworks(r) couldn't have come at a better time. You have an opportunity to nominate your favorite animal welfare charity - although the promotion is not limited to animal charities. In the end, $20,000 will be awarded to one charity; $5,000 to two charities, and $1,000 to 30 different charities. An added bonus for you: The nominators of the three top charities will win $100 worth of riceworks(r) products.

You only have until February 28th to nominate your charity. The process appears simple and no-fuss and the prizes are very generous. As of today, I see there are several animal welfare charities that have been nominated, including ASPCA.

This is a great opportunity to help animals.

February is National Bird Feeding Month

Thankfully, birds are starting to gain more recognition in the mainstream. Born Free USA and the Avian Welfare Coalition names a date in January each year as National Bird Day, focusing more on parrots and other companion birds. To help educate the public about bird feeding and watching, The National Bird Feeding Society has named February National Bird-Feeding Month.

Why not celebrate birds year round with a gift from PJ Publications and Gifts? We have lots and lots of bird lover gifts, including earrings, pins, handbags and totes - from designers like Sienna Sky, Zarah, and Wild Bryde, to name a few. The photo to your left is of our Hummingbird earrings. We carry merchandise that represents various bird species, including cardinals, blue jays, bluebirds, parrots, and many more. Check out our entire gallery of bird lover gifts.
